More computer problems today at the Alabama Dept of Public Health. To quote a good friend, “Computers that don’t compute are the most Alabama thing ever.”
ADPH did report the new daily cases - 1,558 (incl. 576 probables). The 7-day average of cases is now 1,482, which is the highest since August 8. There were also 19 deaths (none probables), which is close to our 7-day average of 20 deaths. Total deaths for the State stand at exactly 2,200.
ADPH did not post the number of tests, however. Therefore, an updated 7-day average positivity rate is not available. When the tests are reported tomorrow, we’ll have to average the two days.
There are now 990 currently confirmed hospital COVID-19 patients statewide in 105 reporting hospitals. That represents a modest decline from 1,002 patients in 106 reporting hospitals yesterday.
Auburn University reported 498 students and employees tested positive over the week of August 22-28, more than double the number from the week before (208). Jacksonville State reported 382 cases for the two weeks ended August 28. Samford University in Birmingham reported 34 cases for the week.
More than 170 countries are in talks to participate in the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (Covax) Facility, which aims to speed vaccine development, secure doses for all countries and distribute them to the most high-risk population groups. But, the Trump Administration announced that the United States will not participate because it does not want to work with the World Health Organization. By refusing to work with Covax, the U.S. has decided to eliminate any chance of accessing doses of promising vaccine candidates developed in other countries - a risky go-it-alone gamble.
Let’s hope that tomorrow will bring better news. Here are the totals:
