Today's coronavirus data further confirms that Alabama has a tough battle on its hands. The new case total for today is 498, the third highest daily total this month, and the 7-day average # of new cases is 445.
Dr. Scott Harris of ADPH reported that the coronavirus surge we have witnessed in Montgomery is the result of community spread - meaning, it cannot be attributed to a single event or location. That is concerning because the virus is more difficult to trace and isolate.
According to bamatracker.com, the 7-day % positive rate also ticked up for the third consecutive day and now exceeds 10%. If the % positive rate is above 10%, that suggests the state may be testing only the sickest patients and missing the milder cases that can lead to community spread.
Recent reports that Alabama is doing more testing came under fire today when Dr. Harris, the head of ADPH, admitted that "some antibody test results" have been included in the total test numbers reported on the ADPH dashboard. Dr. Harris said he does not know how many antibody tests were combined with diagnostic tests but ADPH is working to find out. I will have more to say about this revelation in a separate post.
