I will try to be brief tonight. Alabama set a new record today by a wide margin - 544 new cases blew past the prior record of 401, which was set only last Thursday. Twelve more Alabamians lost their lives. These are unsettling numbers as Gov. Ivey chose to relax more restrictions in advance of Memorial Day Weekend. Montgomery and Mobile counties witnessed 58 and 52 new cases respectively, far more than any other counties.
This comes just one day after Montgomery Mayor Reed announced that Montgomery area hospitals cannot take any more ICU cases because they have run out of beds. Tuscaloosa County is facing a serious outbreak of COVID among construction workers at Bryant-Denny Stadium. And lastly, we pray tonight for the recovery of former coach Pat Dye, who recently tested positive for the virus at the age of 80 and is reportedly hospitalized.
The coming days will surely try our souls. Please act responsibly and remember the actions you take now will have a major impact on the lives of your friends, neighbors and fellow citizens. Below are the daily totals of new COVID cases in Alabama over the last 14 days:
