A wonderful Episcopal priest recently gave me a new way to think about the wearing of masks in the Age of COVID. For me, his perspective furnishes an important link between scientific truth and my faith. He reminded me that the primary purpose of masks is to protect other people from you rather than the other way around. The wearing of a mask is an act of sacrifice. For Christians, it is a part of our witness to humanity's hope for the future. It embraces the second great commandment to love thy neighbor as thyself. Those who refuse to wear a mask out of vanity or convenience are selfishly choosing not to live out their faith.
