Some will look at Alabama’s report today and breathe a sigh of relief. If you encounter such a person, you might caution that 547 new cases, Alabama’s total, is hardly a number to be happy about. Indeed, there are only 12 states in the U.S. that reported more cases than Alabama and, with a 7-day average positivity rate of 10.61%, only Arizona and South Carolina are doing worse on that metric. Sixteen more Alabama residents died, the second most in the last two weeks, and the total current hospitalizations ticked up slightly.
Still, it could have been worse. If you lived in Georgia (1,800) or Florida (4,049) or South Carolina (1,155) or California (4,348), for instance, it would be a new record-setting day in your state. In Louisiana (1,231), residents experienced their worst day since early April, when things looked awfully bleak there. In Texas (3,726), Arizona (3,109) and North Carolina (1,773), you must wonder when the new infections will begin to drop. The data from these states sound a cautionary note for all Alabamians - don’t get complacent, wear a mask!
The rally in Tulsa has confirmed my faith in humanity. I was honestly expecting a huge crowd of lemmings to gather there. It turns out that did not happen. Whether the tiny crowd in that arena can be attributed to self-preservation or, instead, to a rejection of Trump, it’s good news either way. My optimism in America received a boost tonight. Now, that is worth breathing a sigh of relief.
