Alabama’s COVID-19 data today are alarming on several fronts. First, there is the top-line number, 567 new cases. We are now 10 days out from the initial protests in Birmingham, Mobile and Huntsville and this coincides with a significant increase in new cases. What’s more, after 5 straight days of more than 400 new cases, today’s increase builds from a higher baseline than the past. The 7-day average positivity rate (7.42%) increased for the third consecutive day, which effectively rebuts the notion that the increase is merely a result of increased testing.
Second, the number of new hospitalizations rose from 33 to 42, causing a jump in current confirmed hospitalizations to 629. According to one tracker, that is a new record in current COVID-related hospitalizations in Alabama. If today’s numbers are indicative of a new wave on top of the caseload from the last 5 days, our medical facilities could be stretched beyond their limits.
Finally, there were 15 more COVID-related deaths in Alabama today, an increase from 11 yesterday. A total of 744 Alabamians have now died, which is almost triple the number of people who have died in South Korea from the disease.
It is perhaps noteworthy that Madison County saw 16 new cases today, the third consecutive day of increased cases. Madison County has the lowest positivity rate in the State but that rate is clearly on the rise. The same is true for neighboring Morgan County, which saw 27 new cases today. The recent rise in both counties might be a sign that the latest statistics are related to the street protests in Huntsville.
Here are the new case totals for the last 14 days:
5/28 - 487
5/29 - 511
5/30 - 616
5/31 - 593
6/1 - 294
6/2 - 136
6/3 - 85
6/4 - 221
6/5 - 640
6/6 - 458
6/7 - 457
6/8 - 425
6/9 - 497
6/10 - 567
Montgomery Co. again led the State with 69 new cases, followed by Mobile Co. with 58 and Jefferson Co. with 56; however, today is remarkable for the fact that thirteen counties saw a double digit rise in new cases and four counties had 9.
