April 20, 2021
There were 1,443 new cases reported today in Alabama, and 1,110 of them were attributed to tests performed before April 6 - i.e. 333 new cases, exclusive of the backlog. Our 7-day moving average for new daily cases is 345 per day, as compared to 255 cases per day on this same day last week - a rise of 35.5%. In the United States, new daily cases fell 1.8% compared to the prior week.
Alabama now has 3.58 patients per reporting hospital (372 patients for 104 reporting hospitals), compared to 3.23 patients per hospital on this day last week - a rise of 10.9%. New hospitalizations are now averaging 49 patients per day, up from 40 per day for the prior week.
In the last week in the U.S., an average of 3.13 million doses per day were administered, a 3% decrease over the week before. Alabama has averaged 29.3K doses per day, a 10% decrease over the prior week. Alabama has administered at least one dose to 1,483,779 people, covering 37.7% of the 16 and older population and 30.3% of the State’s entire population (national average = 39.9%). At least 946,333 people have been fully vaccinated, or 19.3% of the State’s population (national average = 25.7%).
Globally, the 7-day rolling average of new coronavirus cases neared a record high of over 750,000 on Sunday and again Monday — the highest of any point during the pandemic, except for Dec. 17. The State Department will increase the number of countries on the “Do Not Travel” list from 16% to 80% of the world amid the surge.
All adults in every state are now eligible for a vaccine, yet vaccine resistance appears to be hardening. According to a national poll released today, two-thirds of unvaccinated adults in the U.S. said they were either “not likely at all” or “not very likely” to get the injections, while just 14 percent of unvaccinated Americans said they were likely to get the vaccine. The poll also found that 56 percent of Americans reported receiving at least one shot so far. Those two numbers, combined, suggest that immunizations could top out around 70 percent of the American adult population.
What does this mean for Alabama? For one, our senior citizens (65 and older) continue to be at risk. Whereas 80% of America’s seniors have received at least one dose, only 67.4% of Alabamians age 75 and 62.4% of Alabamians age 65-74 have received one dose. There are approximately 850,000 Alabamians who are 65 and older, so around 290,000 of them have yet to receive a single dose of vaccine. At this point, if you are not on the pathway to vaccination, there is no excuse. The totals:

I totally agree, No Excuse! Thank you so much fo your detailed reports!
It is inexplicable why so many Americans are so self destructive--no masks, no vax. Go figure. If it's all about politics, the greatest democracy in the world has failed us. Frank, you do us proud.
